Link: http://judebautista.wordpress.com/2010/07/26/diaspora-and-suspense-in-the-leaving/A woman’s blood curdling scream wakes them up. Grace (LJ Reyes) and Martin (Alwyn Uytingco) meet at the lobby of their apartment floor wondering what happened to their next door neighbor. Neither of them wants to talk about what each has seen and heard in their own rooms, until they realize they have no choice but to turn to each other. The suspense may be reminiscent of “The Ring” or “The Eye”, but “The Leaving” is much more than that and has an important message. Classified under suspense or horror, the underlying theme is one of migration. This is the only horror flick in this year’s batch in Cinemalaya, although Kim Homer Garcia’s “Magkakapatid” can also give you a scare.

No man it seems can resist her charms and she knows how to use them. Lovi Poe has that sweet youthful quality that is on the verge of blossoming to womanhood. “Mayohan” directed by Dan Villegas who has been a long time cinematographer, captured that period of wonder and pain.

Awards are great, but they are not infallible. Last year, I was really impressed with “Engkwentro” by Pepe Diokno and I was telling anyone who’d listen how good it is. It did not win a single award during the Cinemalaya Awards night. A couple of months later it won two awards at the Venice Film fest. The year before that I adored “Boses” by Ellen Ongkeko Marfil, it also didn’t win a single Cinemalaya award. And yet it won in the Honolulu film fest. Interviewing almost all the film makers for this year, most of them are just glad to make their film the way they want to and to beat the deadline. Danny Añonuevo & Paul Sta. Ana (Mayohan) won Best Cinematographer & best Screenplay respectively New Breed Category Being able to accomplish the film is a true achievement and is definitely not a cliché. One thing I noticed this year too the New Breed film makers held each other’s hands waiting for the Best Film announcement. It was similar to Ms. Universe, this group is tight. Please catch the films in U.P. Film institute, whether it won an award or not. You never know you may just find a gem the jurors did not. All of the superlatives that you’ve heard or read about him as a performer could easily be just an exaggeration, an overreaction to his shocking death. That is until you actually witness it for yourself.

The street boys are just one of the many dance groups, singers, actors that performed that night. If you notice the Phil flag during a hip hop dance routine IS A DIRECT INFLUENCE of none other than the late FRANCIS M! he made something so African American into something Filipino. that's his legacy. That's why Francis will forever live on in our hearts. Watch out for my tribute to Francis here...Peace Out.

MAPPING INVISIBLE CITIES 17 October to 7 November 2008 Opening on October 17, 6 pm 3/F Shangri-la Plaza, EDSA corner Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City < Photo By Dennis Rito When German photographer Peter Bialobrzeski travelled through Southeast Asia in winter 2007/8, he combined his own photographic investigations with workshops for young talents in six foremost cities of the region: Jakarta, Hanoi, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Singapore. What came out of the workshops was a multifaceted kaleidoscope of these six metropoles, culminating in the exhibition "Mapping Invisible Cities". Photo By Tammy David > "Mapping Invisible Cities", which opens on October 17, 6pm at 3/F Shangri-la Plaza, features the works of 27 photographers, including 8 (Cathy Quiogue, Che Katigbak, Cristina Luisa Sevilla, Dennis Rito, Estan Cabigas, Gigie Cruz, Kidlat de Guia and Tammy David) from the Philippines. The works from Manila were completed during workshops led by Bialobrzeski at Silverlens Gallery in February 2008. The diverse themes and approaches in the 105 pieces, in addition to Peter Bialobrzeski's work, are like fragments of the unseen and unnoticed ordinariness hidden in these 6 cities. When these fragments are joined in one single frame, like a map, they begin to show what was formerly invisible. <Photo By Cristina Luisa Sevilla In mapping them, these photographers have made their cities more obvious and bring to the surface what we do not (want to) see or notice. The works act as maps that show the organization of space, movement and people. Some also show how maps can be tied to the imagination and abstractions. Altogether, they serve as valuable insights to and experiences of Southeast Asia's largest cities. They also give audiences the ability to see into the future of Southeast Asian photography. "Mapping Invisible Cities" will be on display until November 7. The exhibit is brought to you by the Goethe-Institut in cooperation with Shangri-la Plaza. The Blue Eagles are Champs: But I’m Proud of the Green Archers <Blue Eagle Chris Tiu Hugs Eric Salamat during the celebration. The first editor I ever worked for was Bombit Largoza, in the official student publication of DLSU, The La Sallian. Bombit was our Editor In Chief, believe it or not he was actually teaching classes even before he finished his undergraduate degree. He said, “I hate seeing those alumni who only show up in the finals, after our team has won all of those games. Where were they when we were losing?”. I was a sports writer then. Many, many years later zoom to Thursday, September 25, 2008, I became one of those alumni who only watched it live. And worse, I have to confess that I went to the game as a photographer (professionally) more than as Green Archer. The UAAP has become such a huge event that it’s really become news beyond the sports section. It’s even bigger now than anything we had before. (Left) DLSU coach Franz Pumaren prepared his team well. The depth of ADMU was just too much.(Right) JV Casio salutes fans one last time on his last year as an Archer. Goodbye G shock! Ateneo vs De La Salle really is the big ticket, because of the pride, the vicious rivalry. To have that match up for the finals is such a dream that it’s big news. The reality is that I’ve been so busy; I haven’t even been able to catch the UAAP games on tv. I went to the game, knowing that ADMU has a stronger line up, that defeat is highly probable. First of all, I’d like to commend the Archers, in the opening minutes they did everything as planned. Their scrambling/trapping defense was creating turnovers. They got (MVP) Rabeh Al Hussaini into foul trouble early. Coach Franz Pumaren (of DLSU) and his staff did everything perfectly from preparation to strategy. But because of Ateneo’s deep, deep bench, none of it mattered. James Mangahas was one of several defenders against Chris Tiu > The frontline in particular scored almost at will, Nonoy Baclao>, <Jobe Nkemakolam had the size and strength for those crucial inside shots. This is apart from the consistent scoring of Chris Tiu’s mid range jumpers. Rabeh didn’t even come back ‘til the third quarter and Ateneo was still ahead at half time. Rabeh was awarded the regular season MVP before the game. The beginning of the end for DLSU was the ejection of <RicoMaierhofer. He was thrown out by the ref for supposedly making a middle finger gesture. Rico and the rest of the Archers vehemently claimed that he was calling team mate Casio to go for a screen. No one could even remember what the first technical was about. In spite of this, DLSU kept its head and played on. Only Casio and Revilla’s 3 pointers gave a semblance of a contest after the onslaught of Hussaini> on the inside. Walsham did his best to stop him but with Maierhofer gone it was far easier to score. By the 4th quarter even Casio fouled out. Simon Atkins guards Chris Tiu. Atkins was recently linked to highschool friend Rhian Ramos. Rhian has a new hit show La Lola at GMA 7. The supreme irony I guess is that Ateneo did NOT need those calls to win with a final score of 62-51. DLSU gave a gallant stand in spite of everything. Franz and the team were so heart broken, no one picked up the 1st runner up trophy. They gave their all to win and I’m proud of them. Personally I would’ve still picked up the 1st runner up trophy. Interestingly enough, Nonoy Baclao won the Finals MVP Trophy not Chris Tiu who scored more at least in that game (16 pts, 5 rebounds and a steal). Wouldn’t Ateneans appreciate a win (more) with no one from DLSU being thrown out, just like in Game 1? Then there would be absolutely no doubt they deserved it. In the end, championships are manifest destiny. ADMU really was the stronger squad, a large majority of UAAP coaches surveyed thought they’d win. The real test of loyalty is not in victory but in defeat. I haven’t been there for the Green & White, when they needed me. Where was I in UAAP games or sports where there were hardly any fans or sports coverage? I also used to be a track runner and badminton player for DLSU, we hardly had any fans. And we’d complain about the overwhelming support for basketball. Now as an alumnus, I could hardly even catch the last game of the season. Mac Cuan > (in green) was a champ as an Archer along w team mates Mike Cortes & Mac Cardona. Here he is w Grace Molina in white and the lovely faces at Shangrila Makati where Mac co produces Fashion Watch. there's an up coming show at Shangrila Makatithis October 28 & 30, 2008. <Atty. Andy Bautista poses w Eric Salamat. Andy is the Chairman of the Board for the Shang Group of Companies. He studied his undergrad law in Ateneo, taught Legal Management in DLSU and is also a Dean of the COllege of Law at FEU. He gets to celebrate no matter who wins. He is also the nephew of the (much loved) the late DLSU Pres. Bro. Rafe Donato. Bottom line, this is my ovation to the Green Archers. You fought well, gave it your all, we’re proud of you. You won more games than you lost, kept your head at the most adverse situation against a stronger squad. No one could ask for anything more. <PLDT Smart's Most Valuable Player, Manny Panglinan w ADMU President and PLDT Board member Fr. Bien Nebres. Manny Pangilinan is an avid supporter of the Blue Eagles on and off the court. Its also the last year of senior Yuri Escueta (below) <ADMU fans got a scare when Eric Salamat got cramps at the 3rd quarter ] As a fan, as an alumnus I’m going to try and be there for the other sports, not looking for the team to win but to support them no matter what. When we do that we give back, it doesn’t have to be money. We’re giving faith, ANIMO. That’s the true spirit of sports. I’m going to encourage other people, whether they’re a U.E Red Warrior, a U.P Maroon, a UST Glowing Tiger, an FEU Tamaraw, an NU Bull dog, an ADU Falcon to do the same and yes, even the Ateneo Blue Eagles. Mang Jack > has been the Discipline officer since the Cretaceous period at DLSU. He's tough on troublemakers but always ready to help. It's nice to see you Mang Jack!! Post script: Has anyone noticed the PBA has moved to CS9? It’s the ALL Filipino Conference. What makes any league exciting is the balanced strength of nearly all the teams and that’s the situation now. You don’t have to wait for the start of the UAAP season, meanwhile go for the pros. The stars of the UAAP are all there, Blue Eagles Enrico Vilanueva of the TJ Hotdogs, Rich Alvarez of Red Bull and Green Archer Mac Cardona of Talk N Text and many many more. < Blue eagle Rissa Samson uses a Canon IXUS to shoot the celebration w Luigi Trillo (Below) Honestly, I think the Archers had the better Pep Squad! Cheer for your school, your sport, you won't regret it, whether its the PBA, UAAP or NCAA.. Ciao!
